‘Akatsuki’ has thick margins of crisp white with a green center on the leaves. While variegated foliage may be a show stopper, it doesn’t stop there. Cornus kousa ‘Akatsuki’ was found in Japan as a variegated Sport off the ever-popular pink flowering ‘Satomi’. This means the blooms are quite showy as well. They start out as a white, but as the bloom matures it turns to a rose-pink and may even turn to a rosy red as the bloom season progresses. ‘Akatsuki’ may reach 8-10 ft in 10 years. Make sure to give this dogwood protection from the hot afternoon sun.
