Description
The calamondin, also known as Calamansi or Calamondin orange, is a small, ornamental citrus native to Southeast Asia. It produces miniature, tangy oranges that resemble limes in size and appearance. These oranges are often used for culinary purposes in jams, preserves, and beverages. The fruits tend to become overripe quickly, so it’s best to pick them right when they start to exhibit colour. With its glossy foliage and fragrant blossoms, the calamondin tree is prized as a decorative addition to indoor spaces.
Lighting: Place in a south-facing window to receive 6-8 hours of bright sunlight daily. Not enough light will cause the plant to stretch and drop leaves and fruit. Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth on all sides, as it tends to grow towards the light source.
Watering: Water when the top 3cm of soil dries out. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Stick your finger into the soil to check its moisture level, or use our moisture meter to remove the guesswork.
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix like our Fafard potting soil when repotting
Temperature: Keep the environment consistently warm, within the range of 18-30C and avoid drafts from windows/vents
Humidity: Keep humidity levels moderate to high, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles to help supplement humidity.
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season. Reduce to every 8 weeks in fall and winter.
