Tsuma beni is a beautiful small upright that is always in high demand and not commonly found in the nursery trade. The large leaf is a light green with bright purplish red border shines in the early spring. The thick margins of purple red are quite attractive and grab your attention in a photo or in the landscape. This border persist well into late spring and sometimes even early summer. By mid-to-late summer the leaves turn to a solid green. While the leaves on ‘Tsuma gaki’ droop in the spring, ‘ the leaves on ‘Tsuma beni’ may often cup upward. Fall color on ‘Tsuma beni’ is typically a bright to bold red. ‘Tsuma beni’ may reach 6-8 ft in 10 years. ‘Tsuma beni’ translates as “red nails”. ‘Tsuma beni’ was on the 1882 list of Japanese maples from Japan.
