Description
Philodendron African Fantasy, also known as Thaumatophyllum African Fantasy, is a unique hybrid resulting from a cross between Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron goeldii. It is known for its large, deeply lobed, glossy green leaves, which give it a distinctive, tropical appearance. Unlike some Philodendron cultivars with variegation, African Fantasy maintains a rich green colour throughout its foliage.
This plant has a semi-upright to spreading growth habit, making it an excellent choice for statement pieces in indoor settings. As it matures, its leaves develop more pronounced lobes, creating a stunning architectural display. With proper care, this Philodendron can thrive indoors for many years, bringing a lush, exotic feel to your space.
Care Guide
Light Requirements
- Prefers bright, indirect light for optimal growth.
- Can tolerate moderate light but will grow more slowly.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- If kept in lower light conditions, leaf size may be smaller, and growth may become leggy.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Water when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. Typically, this means watering every 7-10 days, but frequency may vary depending on climate.
- Use room-temperature, filtered, or dechlorinated water to prevent root stress.
- Ensure excess water can drain freely from the pot to avoid root rot.
Humidity & Temperature
- Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels (50-70%). If humidity is low, consider:
- Using a pebble tray with water.
- Running a humidifier nearby.
- Misting occasionally, though not excessively.
- Prefers temperatures between 18-27C (65-80F).
- Avoid placing near cold drafts, heating vents, or air conditioning units.
Soil & Potting
- Requires a well-draining, aerated soil mix to support healthy root development.
- Ideal soil mixture:
- 50% peat-based potting mix or coco coir
- 20% perlite for aeration
- 20% orchid bark for structure
- 10% worm castings or compost for slow-release nutrients
- Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent standing water.
Fertilisation
- Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser (such as 20-20-20 or 10-10-10) every 4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Reduce feeding to once every 6-8 weeks in autumn and winter, as growth slows.
- Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to salt buildup and leaf tip browning.
Pruning & Maintenance
- Prune to remove damaged, yellowing, or leggy growth and encourage new growth.
- Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
- If the plant grows too large, you can trim back older leaves to maintain its shape.
Support & Growth Habits
- While it is not a true climber, African Fantasy benefits from some support as it matures.
- You can provide a moss pole, stake, or trellis to encourage upright growth.
- If left untrained, it will develop a sprawling, shrubby habit.
Propagation
This plant is typically propagated through stem cuttings or air layering.
Propagation by Stem Cuttings
- Cut a 6-10 cm (2.5-4 inch) stem section with at least one node.
- Remove any lower leaves and place the cutting in water or a moist perlite/soil mix.
- Keep in a warm, humid environment with indirect light.
- Roots should develop within 2-4 weeks, after which the cutting can be transplanted into soil.
Propagation by Air Layering
- Select a healthy stem and make a small incision near a node.
- Wrap the area with damp sphagnum moss, securing it with plastic wrap.
- Keep the moss moist until roots appear (usually within 4-6 weeks).
- Once well-rooted, cut below the new root system and plant in soil.
Pests & Common Issues
- Pests: Susceptible to spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, and thrips. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Yellowing Leaves: Usually due to overwatering or nutrient deficiencies. Ensure proper drainage and fertilisation.
- Brown Leaf Tips: Often caused by low humidity or excessive fertiliser. Adjust care accordingly.
- Leggy Growth: Insufficient lightmove the plant to a brighter location.
